Thrombophilia
The term thrombophilia covers a range of conditions that result in an individual having 'sticky blood', and thus an increased risk of thrombosis. Thrombophilia may be either congenital, and inherited at birth; or acquired during life.
Congenital thrombophilia
These include:
- Factor V Leiden
- Prothrombin 20210
- Protein C deficiency
- Protein S deficiency
- Antithrombin deficiency
- Other
congenital thrombophilias
Acquired thrombophilia
These include:
- Antiphospholipid or Hughes' syndrome
- Myeloproliferative disorders
- Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria
- Hyperhomocysteinaemia
