About thrombosis
Thrombophilia

Acquired thrombophilia

The term acquired thrombophilia covers a range of conditions that can develop during the lifetime of an individual. These result in stickier blood and thus an increased risk of thrombosis.

Most acquired thrombophilias are rare, apart from the antiphospholipid syndrome and hyperhomocysteineaemia, which are becoming more widely recognised.

Acquired thrombophilia include:

Antiphospholipid or Hughes' syndrome
Myeloproliferative disorders
Paroxysmal nocturnal haemoglobinuria
Hyperhomocysteinaemia
