Launch of Lifeblood charity turns
spotlight on thrombosis

Release date: 1 October 2003

Thrombosis is arguably the commonest cause of death in the United Kingdom, yet astonishingly this fact is not widely known. Most people have little or no understanding about the causes and effects of thrombosis or how it can be prevented. And within the fields of medicine, many see thrombosis as a peripheral area.

It is for this reason that Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity has been established.

Lifeblood has been set up by a group of leading medical professionals who recognise the need to promote awareness about thrombosis and to increase understanding of its causes, effects and the treatments available. The charity's aim is two-fold: to advance medical science in relation to the diagnosis, causes, prevention, alleviation, management and cure of thrombosis; and to provide public education on the understanding and awareness of thrombosis.

Funds raised for Lifeblood will be put towards a range of studies looking at why and how a thrombosis occurs as well as research into the management and the improvement of current treatments available. Alongside this, the charity plans to provide an education programme on the causes and effects of thrombosis.

"Many people are unaware of the high-risk situations that can lead to thrombosis, or that they may be at risk through inheritance. Most adults could be affected sometime during their lives," comments Lifeblood Chairman Brian Gardner.

"Recent publicity has left the general public with the belief that there is little or nothing that can be done to avoid a thrombosis, and this is not true.

"Long haul flights are by no means the only cause, and there is much that a person can do in their everyday lives to avoid a thrombosis.

"Our plan is to provide people with quality and impartial information about thrombosis, as it is so common and can affect people in many different ways."

This service includes literature that will be made available in GP surgeries and hospitals, as well as a website that gives detailed information and - eventually - breakthroughs in research, particularly that undertaken in the UK.

Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity is governed by four trustees, who are supported by a growing group of recognised leaders in thrombosis care and research within the UK. Drawn from every branch of medical practice, this group advises Lifeblood on the latest thoughts on treatment and prevention, and will act as a Peer Review Panel for the charity's scientific research programme.
