'I'm a Celebrity' boost for Lifeblood

Release date: 1 October 2003

Lifeblood, a UK charity in its infancy and dedicated to raising awareness of the causes and effects of thrombosis, has just received news of the final total raised by Linda Barker on I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!. Linda chose Lifeblood as the charity she would represent during her time in the jungle earlier this year.

As a result, more than £100,000 has now been added to Lifeblood funds, and will be put to great use on research projects, as well as the development of a public awareness-raising programme on the risks of thrombosis.

"Many people are unaware of the situations that can lead to thrombosis, or that they may be at risk through inheritance," comments Lifeblood Chairman Brian Gardner.

"Most adults are potentially at risk sometime during their lives, and as thrombosis occurs in every branch of medical practice, there is a real need to highlight the range of conditions that can increase the odds in a person.

Lifeblood was set up as a charity by a group that recognised the need to promote awareness about thrombosis and increase the understanding of its causes, effects and treatment. The charity's aim is two-fold: to advance medical science in relation to the diagnosis, causes, prevention, alleviation, management and cure of thrombosis; and to provide public education on the understanding and awareness of thrombosis.

"This windfall from I'm a Celebrity is a tremendous bonus," adds Brian Gardner. "Our desire to set up Lifeblood – and the actual establishment of the charity – has been a long time in the planning, so we have set ourselves priorities for research projects, and a public awareness campaign is already set up for this Autumn.

"This extra money will help us to step up our research programme and further develop public awareness.

"We cannot thank Linda Barker enough for choosing Lifeblood - and of course the British public for voting for her!"
