Lifeblood takes 'Stop the Clots' campaign
to Parliament

Release date: 17 December 2003

Lifeblood, a charity set up to raise increased awareness of thrombosis and to support research into the condition, took its 'Stop the Clots' campaign to Parliament yesterday, to get thrombosis further up the healthcare agenda.

The number of deaths in the UK each year that relate to thrombosis are greater than the combined deaths due to breast cancer, HIV/AIDS and road traffic accidents, yet little is really known about the causes, symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of blood clots.

"More than 33,000 people die each year because of venous
thrombosis and pulmonary embolism," commented Dr Beverley Hunt, a leading NHS Consultant Haematologist and one of the founders of Lifeblood.

"There is so much brilliant research already being undertaken in
the UK, but we need to do so much more to reduce disability and death due to thrombosis."
