Football Club raises funds for Lifeblood

Release date: 10 March 2004

Many members of the Eckington community turned out to a Pie and Pea Supper, held to honour the memory of local man Tony Sapsford, raising £635 for Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity.

The Eckington Boys/Belles Football Club (EBFC) presented a cheque to Tony's wife Jean following the fundraising event. Tony was a committee member of the football club for more than ten years, until his death last November, caused by an arterial thrombosis.

And the Club has plans to raise even more funds in Tony's memory with the launch of an annual football match on Sunday 28 March, where the winning team will be presented with the Lifeblood Cup.

Thrombosis is a major cause of death in the United Kingdom, yet astonishingly this fact is not widely known. Most people have little or no understanding about the causes and effects of thrombosis and how it can be prevented.

It is for this reason that Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity was established. The funds donated by the EBFC will go towards supporting thrombosis research in the UK.
