Press releases

Lifeblood focuses on thrombosis and pregnancy

Release date: April 2004

Since its launch less than six months ago, Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity has received hundreds of letters, emails and telephone calls, from people who have suffered from a thrombosis, currently have a thrombotic condition, or who have lost a loved one to thrombosis. These people are encouraged by the establishment of Lifeblood and its aims to raise awareness of the causes and effects of thrombosis, and to raise money to fund research.

In particular, Lifeblood has received many letters from women who suffered a thrombosis during pregnancy, or shortly after the birth of their child. The recurring theme of all these letters was disbelief, then anger that little or no background information on thrombosis was available or given to them during their pregnancy.

In a world where women are very hungry for any details that relate to their pregnancy, there is a plethora of health, diet and promotional information provided. But one thing is missing - the facts about thrombosis and pregnancy. All of the women who wrote to Lifeblood asked the charity to help change this situation.

About one in 1,000 women will develop a thrombosis in pregnancy, and this is about ten times that of the risk of a non-pregnant woman of the same age. Pulmonary embolism -
a blood clot in the lung - is the most common cause of mothers dying in pregnancy and has been for years. Many women can have long-term health problems as a result of deep vein thrombosis and this is potentially preventable.

Lifeblood plans to address this situation by highlighting the risks of thrombosis and pregnancy, beginning with the production of an informative Thrombosis and Pregnancy fact sheet. Through the promotion and distribution of its pregnancy fact sheet, Lifeblood: The Thrombosis Charity hopes to make pregnant women and health professionals more aware of risk factors for thrombosis, leading to the investigating of women with suspected thrombosis, and the appropriate measures being taken concerning the care of mother and baby.
